Helena is my home. I married here. My husband and I raised our son here. Living in a community where there is quality public education, open space, and caring neighbors has been a privilege. I want to ensure young families can continue to experience the same quality of life we have been able to over the years.

Janet on Day 87 – the last day of the 2015 Montana Legislature

Over the last 30 years, I’ve built a reputation of being fair and effective as a citizen advocate for Montana’s habitat, wildlife, and clean water. After winning the November 2014 election, this experience let me hit the ground running as your representative at the Capitol.

During my first session as a legislator, I served on the House Appropriations Committee, which reviewed state programs and developed the state’s budget. As part of my duties in Appropriations, I served on the Subcommittee on Natural Resources and Transportation. This work meant I became intimately familiar with the budget of all the natural resource agencies (Departments of Agriculture, Livestock, Department of Environmental Quality, Fish, Wildlife & Parks, and Natural Resources and Conservation) and the Dept. of Transportation. My interim committee is the Environmental Quality Council, which oversees the Montana Department of Environmental Quality, Department of Natural Resources and Conservation, and Fish, Wildlife & Parks.

I ran for the legislature to be an effective advocate for the values Helenans care about: quality education, access to healthcare, assuring fair and open elections, protecting the environment, and improving the economy.

During my re-election campaign, I am proud to have received endorsements from Montana Conservation Voters, Montana Sportsmen Alliance, MEA-MFT, Planned Parenthood Advocates of Montana, NARAL Pro-choice Montana, and Carol’s List, as well as many individuals.
