I am running for reelection to the Montana Legislature in 2016, so I can continue to be a strong voice for my constituents and to advance Montana values. I believe that:
- We can have a healthy environment and a healthy economy. We must encourage economic development while preserving the clean and healthful environment we all hold dear. I’ve spent more than thirty years advocating for clean water, wildlife, and open space – and I was able to continue to champion these causes in the 2015 Montana Legislature.
- Everyone in our community should have basic life
provisions, including food, shelter, and access to healthcare. During the 2015 Montana Legislature, I strongly support expanding Medicaid to provide coverage for 70,000 additional Montanans (SB 405). If reelected, I plan to defend this expansion.
- High-quality public education is the linchpin of our democracy and key to Montana’s economic future. My son is the product of Helena public schools and his teachers prepared him well to succeed in college. We must continue to support our public schools and teachers as they work to improve graduation rates and to assure that all Montana students can reach their full potential.
- “Government of the people, by the people and for the people” depends on keeping dark money out of politics and making sure that all eligible voters have access to the polls. As a citizen advocate, I’ve lobbied to strengthen our disclosure laws, so citizens know who is funding campaign material. As a legislator in 2015, I supported the Disclosure Act (SB 289), which will improve transparency in electoral campaigns. Again, if reelected in 2016, I will work hard to ensure that the Disclose Act remains effective and strong.”
